It’s not cancer. It’s NF.
That’s right: tumours aren’t just a cancer thing. News to you? That’s not surprising – cancer’s nasty and gets talked about a lot. Everyone knows someone who’s dealt with The Big C. But NF flies under the radar because no one wants to talk about it.
NF (full name: Neurofibromatosis) is a group of genetic conditions that cause tumours to grow on nerves throughout the body. These tumours can appear anywhere and affect people in very different ways – from blindness, deafness, and chronic pain to learning challenges, disfigurement, and even – yes – cancer. It’s also really hard to pronounce.
Anyone can be born with NF. It affects people of all races, genders, and ethnicities, affecting around 4 million people worldwide. So it’s nasty, too – and because it flies under the radar it often goes undiagnosed or untreated.
Is there a cure?
No cure yet, but there is hope.
A breakthrough drug called Koselugo has recently been approved for use in Canada to help children with inoperable tumours caused by NF. With continued support, we can fuel more research, treatment options and, ultimately, a cure.
